mk-drive

Support

Last updated 14 September 2026.

mk-drive is a self-hosted web drive. MK Drive is its app for iPhone and iPad: the drive under Locations in the Files app, plus a small app to browse, preview and upload. This page answers the questions that come up most. For anything else, the address is at the bottom.

You need a drive first

The app does not come with storage. It connects to an mk-drive you run on your own machine, or one that a person you trust runs for you. Setting one up is one container:

docker run -p 8810:8810 -v /path/to/files:/locations/Files -v mk-drive-data:/data ghcr.io/mkornas/mk-drive

To try the app before you have a drive, start a demo drive with sample files and a demo account, reset on every start:

docker run --rm -e DRIVE_DEMO=true -p 8810:8810 ghcr.io/mkornas/mk-drive

Then sign in as [email protected] with demo-drive-2026.

Signing in

Type the drive's address as you would in a browser, for example https://drive.example.com, or http://192.168.1.10:8810 on the home network. Then your email on that drive, and one of:

  • Your mk-drive password, when the drive offers password sign-in. The app uses it once to make an app password called "MK Drive on iPhone", keeps only that, and closes the session again. Your real password is never stored on the phone.
  • An app password you made yourself, under Settings, Devices, App passwords on the drive. This is the way in when your drive only offers single sign-on: signing in through the provider does not work in the app yet.

If the drive says password sign-in is not offered from this network, the operator has limited passwords to the home network. Make an app password from home, or ask the operator for one.

The Files app

After signing in, open Files, tap Browse, and turn on MK Drive under Locations if it is not on yet. Every location your account may open is there. Browse, open, save, make folders, rename, move and delete as with any other location, and pick files from the drive in any app that attaches files. Folders are listed when you open them and files are downloaded when you open them; nothing is synced ahead of time.

Deleting moves things to the location's trash on the drive, where they can be restored from the web app.

The app

The app shows your locations with their free space, folders with thumbnails, and a preview of any file. Upload from the folder's menu: pick files from Files or any other app that offers them. Large files go up in pieces; keep the app open until the upload is done.

Share links, the photo timeline and the Storage pages are in the web app, not in MK Drive yet.

Signing out and removing the phone

Sign out under Settings in the app to forget the drive on this phone; that also removes MK Drive from the Files app. To lock out a phone you no longer have, sign in to the drive in a browser and remove its app password under Settings, Devices. Deleting the app removes the files it kept; sign out first, or revoke the phone on the drive, so the app password goes too.

Something is wrong

  • The app cannot reach the drive but a browser can: check that the address has the right scheme and no path after the host, and that the drive answers over HTTPS. A drive on a plain http:// address on the home network works too, but only while the phone is on that network.
  • The drive did not accept the email and password: the password that works in a browser is the one to use. After a wrong attempt the drive waits a few seconds before it lets anyone in, so give it a moment.
  • The drive only offers single sign-on: make an app password under Settings, Devices, App passwords in the web app and sign in with that instead of your password.
  • MK Drive is not in Files: open the app once after installing it, then in Files tap Browse and turn on MK Drive under Locations. The app's Settings screen says whether it is available there.
  • A file will not upload: folders you have read-only access to refuse uploads, and the error says so. A file whose name starts with a dot uploads but stays hidden in listings.

Refunds and purchases

The app is sold by Apple. Refunds, receipts and family sharing go through the App Store, under your Apple account, not through the author.

Asking for help

Write to the address below with what you did, what you expected and what happened instead. Add the app's version from its App Store page, the iOS version, and the drive's version from the bottom of the drive's sidebar. Screenshots help. Questions about your own files and your account go to whoever runs your drive; the author cannot see either.
